Paper making in the small town of Fabriano, in the Ancona province of the Italian region of the Marche, can be traced back to the 13 th century. Having secured the secrets of paper manufacture from the Arabs, the town quickly became the centre of paper production in Europe, through the skill of Fabriano’s paper making artisans. By introducing three innovations: paper watermarking, the invention of the hammer mill (to break down the rag fibres) and the use of animal gelatin for surface sizing (replacing wheat starch sizing in the paper and so eliminating the problem of its rapid deterioration), the town of Fabriano became regarded as the cradle of modern papermaking. Furthermore, many great artists of the time, including the sculptor, Michelangelo Buonarroti, used paper made by the Fabriano artisans for their private letters.
The modern paper maker, which is now part of the Fedrigoni Group of Verona, has its routes dating back to 1782, when Pietro Miliani founded the paper company, “Cartiere Miliani”. The Fabriano based company under Giuseppe Miliani was transformed into a major industrial complex and won the gold medal at the Great Exhibition in London of 1851. Under Giovanbattista Miliani, the company grew through merges with other paper mills in the area and in 1906, became “Societa Anonima Cartiere Pietro Miliani” and remaining under the ownership of the Miliani family until 1931, when the factory was nationalised. In 1947 the company became “Cartiere Miliani Fabriano”.
In 2002, the Fedrigoni Group acquired the company and developed “Fabriano” into one of the world’s leading paper brands. "Fabriano" is not only famous for its fine-art and stationery papers but also it is one of the leading manufacturers of banknote and security papers.
